Dunk Island · Great Barrier Reef
The Reef
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. World Heritage listed. The reef around Dunk Island is alive with a large array of colourful reef fish, green sea turtles gliding past, dolphins cruising the shallows, and giant clams embedded in the coral. Soft coral gardens sway with the current.
Visibility shifts with the seasons. Summer brings warmer water, coral spawning, and manta rays. Winter brings clarity, calm conditions, and the humpback migration. Every visit is different. The reef doesn't repeat itself.
The reef doesn't perform for a crowd. It reveals itself to the few who come quietly.
The Advantage
The reef is 20 minutes off the beach. Not two hours from Cairns. No bus full of strangers. No barge. No numbered wristband.
The same Great Barrier Reef. World Heritage listed. The difference is how you get there and who you share it with. Maximum ten people. A local guide who knows the reef because they live next to it.
Without the day trip that eats your whole day.

The Island
E.J. Banfield chose Dunk Island as his home for twenty years. His writing put Dunk on the global map. He came for a visit. He never left.
Dunk Island sits inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, 20 minutes from Mission Beach by boat. It is not a reef access point. It is a destination. The reef wraps around it. The rainforest covers it.
This is not a day trip from Cairns. This is the reef from where the reef actually is.
