Wildside Adventures · Mission Beach
Family-owned. Mission Beach. Three worlds. One wild side.
The Beginning
Allan Thomas took his first trip down the Tully River in 1989, under the guidance of John “Johnny Mac” Macrossin. He was hooked immediately. What followed was a career spent on rivers, in rainforests, and in the water — building something at each turn.
He ran tours to Blenco Falls with Swaggy Adventures. He operated sports rafting, platypus tours and multi-day river trips out of Nymboida in New South Wales. When drought hit in 2002, he adapted — moved into school groups, spent time in Byron Bay as a safety officer and on-set rigger for Warner Bros, ran corporate events and team-building programs.
Mission Beach kept calling.
In 2014, Allan came back and re-established Wildside Adventures, starting with sports rafting on the Tully River. The place he had known since 1989. The river that started it all.
Three Worlds
Allan did not build three businesses. He built one. Mission Beach handed him the rest.
The river was already there — 45 minutes inland, grade 2-3 rapids, running year-round. In 2017, the old adventure camp at Echo Creek became available. A 240-acre property amongst the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. It was a natural fit for the school groups and corporate programs Allan had been running for years.
Dunk Island sits 20 minutes offshore. Wildside is Dunk Island's preferred inner reef partner. The reef is the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The island is one of the most recognisable in Far North Queensland.
Three environments. Each one done properly. Each one local.
The Philosophy
Wild is personal. The guides are local. The river is their backyard. The reef is 20 minutes off the beach, not two hours from a city. The rainforest has been here for 180 million years and it does not need a brochure to explain itself.
Wildside does not try to be everything. Three worlds. Each one done properly. Each one guided by people who know the place, not a script.
Best of Queensland Experiences 2025. Recognised by Tourism and Events Queensland. This is not a participation award. It means the guest experience has been independently assessed and rated among the best in the state.
Sustainable Tourism certified. Operating inside World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park demands more than compliance. It demands genuine care. That certification is the documented proof.
The people who run the river, the reef, and the rainforest. Real faces, real stories.
